Bi-Lo Fuel Perks...

A huge bonus at Bi-Lo is the Fuel Perks they offer. However, I do not think many people fully understand how to utilize these benefits. Must people know the basics--For every $50.00 you spend, you earn $0.05 off a gallon of gas (up to 20 gallons). Now, if you coupon well and save half on your groceries by coupon, the average (family of 4) monthly spending would be about $200-$250. In other words, that only averages out to about $4.00-$5.00 off a 20 gallon tank of gas ($0.25/gallon off). That's really not a huge savings on gas.

Therefore, you must understand how Bi-Lo works. Some times you will find in the Bi-Lo sales paper "Double Fuel Perks" during such and such days. Or, you will see "Fuel Perks Rewards." This is where you can score BIG!! By big, I mean I have earned in three weeks $1.70 off EVERY gallon of gas (up to 20 gallons). That equals out to $34 of savings in a tank of gas in THREE weeks!!

How do I do it?? Well, let's take this week's sales paper for example and my $4.97 spending that earned me $0.20 off per gallon.

If you purchase THREE Products listed in the paper (there's about 12 listed--charmin toilet paper, pampers baby wipes, Tide, Tide Stain Release, Crest Toothpaste, Crest Month wash, etc.)

Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste: $3.89
Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste: $3.89
Tide Stain Release Large: $6.99

Total: $14.77

With Bi-Lo Card:
Toothpaste: $2.49
Toothpaste: $2.49
Tide Stain Release: $5.99

Total: $10.97
Toothpaste Coupon: $0.75 (doubles for $1.50)
Toothpaste Coupon: $0.75 (doubles for $1.50)
Tide Stain Release: $3.00

Coupon Savings: $6.00
Total: $4.97
Fuel Perks: $0.20/gallon

Did I NEED toothpaste--not at the moment, but it was good toothpaste for only $1.00 and you can never have too much toothpaste!! It is always needed, plus it helped earned me fuel perks!

Friday, I also went to Bi-Lo and earned my first $0.20 off a gallon with the same reward, but I bought CHarmin Ultrasoft 18 roll tissue (mega rolls), toothpaste, and Tide Stain Release. My total for those three items were $12.47 and I earned $0.20 off a gallon (so in three days, I earned $0.40 off a gallon and spent $17.44). Again, this is ALL the stuff I use! And again....maybe it was not needed RIGHT now--well, I needed toilet paper and Tide stain release--but it will be used.

A huge concept to couponing well (and utilizing fuel perks) is to STOCK up on things while they are on sale AND you have a coupon for it. For instance, I have 12 tubes of toothpaste (Crest Pro-Health), 7 SETS of shampoo and conditioner, 5 razors (GREAT razors, the new ProGlide 5 blade razors), 4 shaving creams, 4 men's body washes, 6 women's body washes, and 4 tooth brushes in my upstairs closet. I can guarentee you that ALL that was less than $20 together!

Bi-Lo Great Buys!!

I went this morning to Bi-Lo just to buy CEREAL!!! I already had a ton of cereal, but the only thing I have been craving the past weeks is Lucky Charms and Fruity Pebbles. Even though I'm pregnant, I am trying hard to stick to only buying what's on sale and I have a coupon for it. So---unfortunately, my only pregnancy craving has not been met UNTIL now:)

I bought THREE boxes of Lucky CHarms and I may go back and get more:) Bi-Lo will only allow you to use three of the same coupon, so that is all I could do!

Today, I bought the following:

(Prices are before sales and coupons)
(3) Lucky Charms ($3.84 each)
(1) Cookie Crisp ($3.89)
(1) Reese Peanut Butter Puffs Cereal ($3.43)
(2) Cans of Potatoes ($0.79 each)
(1) Bag Pedigree Dog Snacks ($3.74)
(2) Blocks Sharp Cheese ($2.89)

Schick Rebate

Not sure if anyone has used there Schick Hydro coupon from the newspaper on 6/13. However, in the Charlotte area the coupon was worth $5.00 off and last Sunday I used mine at CVS. The Schick Hydro was on sale for $8.99, plus if you purchased $20 in Schick products, you received $10 Extra Bucks. There's also a Schick Hydro 3 blade or 5 blade razor rebate (up to $10.99).

So--if you haven't already, use your coupon to receive $5.00 off a razor AND feel out the rebate form. Wal-Mart has a great buy on the Razor set for $9.97 (Razor, shaving cream, and extra blades); use your coupon and then submit the rebate for a profit of $5.00.

On my CVS trip, you recall I received a $9.08 profit after rebates and extra bucks. Well, I actually will have made $18.07 because I am submitting another rebate (for the razor).

Coupon Policies

It is very important to know each stores coupon policies before planning. Some stores double coupons, while others do not. Some have special weeks where they TRIPLE coupons. Therefore, before you go, you need to be aware of their policies. Here are some stores and their coupon policies.

Bi-Lo
(must use your Bi-Lo card to get sale prices)
1. You can use a store coupon WITH a manufacturer's coupon.
2. Most double coupons that are $0.60 or less (here in Charlotte they double up to $0.99)
I suggest you call your local Bi-Lo to check on the value.
3. You do not have to buy 2 of an item that is B1G1 Free--they ring up half price.
If you do buy two, use TWO coupons!

FUEL PERKS
Bi-Lo partners with local gas stations, generally BP (the store can tell you the nearest gas station), and for every $50.00 you spend, you receive $0.05 off per gallon of gas (up to 20 gallons). They roll over and expire every quarter. I've paid $1.95 gas after a month of saving my fuel perks! At times, fuel perks are doubled and you receive $0.10 for every $50.00.

Harris Teeter
(must use your VIC card to double coupons and get sale prices)
1. Double all coupons up to $0.99.
2. They only double 20 coupons per day.
3. You do not have to buy 2 of an item that is B1G1; it will ring up half price.
4. Most stores only allow you to use one coupon per B1G1 deal, so try to get just one.
5. They will not accept more than 3 of the exact coupon per day.

Harris Teeter often has TRIPLE weeks. As well, they run Super Double weeks where they double coupons with a value you $1.98 or less.

Food Lion
(I'm not a huge fan because they have no SET policy)
1. Most do not double coupons. Some are beginning to double less than $0.60, so check with your local store--Charlotte does not double.
2. READ the sale sticker at the store, they generally say if you must buy 2 to get the B1G1 special. You can ask your local store manager as well if they ring up half price.
3. You can use store coupons and manufacturer's coupons together.

Ingles
1. Doubles coupons $0.50 or less.
2. Only doubles three coupons for every $10 spent. So, spend $10, double 3; spend $20, double 6, etc.
3. Only two coupons that are identical will be doubled. You can use a lot of the same coupon, but only two will be doubled.

Lowes Food
1. Doubles coupons $0.99 or less.
2. Doubles only 20 coupons per day.
3. B1G1 specials will ring up half price, so you only have to buy one. You can use two coupons if you buy two.
4. They accept any competitor coupon for value off total.

Wal-Mart
1. Does not double coupons.
2. Matches any sales price.
3. Accepts any number of coupons.

Target
1. Allows you to use Target coupons with a manufacturer coupon.
2. Does not double coupons.
3. Accepts any number of coupons.

CVS
1. Does not double.
2. Allows you to use CVS coupons with a manufacturer's coupon. This is where great deals come!
3. Accepts any number of coupons.
4. Accepts any number of Extra Bucks.

When speaking of doubling and tripling, often with Internet coupons, you see "DO NOT DOUBLE OR TRIPLE." If the coupon begins with a 5, it will be doubled or tripled. Cashiers do not read the coupon--they scan them! I've never had a coupon eligible to be doubled not be, except some coupons I have clipped from Sunday papers that said "DO NOT..." but they also did not begin with a 5.

Hope this helps get you started even more with your couponing!

How to Shop for Groceries...

Rule #1: Always look at sales papers prior to going and have all coupons together
Rule #2: NEVER SHOP WITHOUT A LIST
Rule #3: ALWAYS HAVE A BUDGET

Now let me explain, my rules for shopping for groceries wisely.

Rule #1: Always look at sales papers prior to going and have all coupons together.
You must prepare before you go or you will impulse shop. You will buy what you think you need or not buy items at the best prices. Also, to get great deals, you may need to shop at more than one store (not necessarily weekly).

I try to sit down a couple times a week and go through the weekly sales ads for the various grocery stores with my coupons beside me. I may not NEED mustard this week, but if it is buy one get one free for $1.99 and I have a $0.50 coupon....that means it is really $0.99 for one (must stores do NOT require you to buy two, but will half--there are policies for every store), and if you shop at a store that doubles coupons (Bi-Lo, Ingles, Publix, Harris Teeter, and more), then your $0.50 coupon is worth $1.00. What's that mean? FREE mustard!! Anything that is a great deal (especially FREE), I buy whether it is needed or not. That is why I have about seven different types of BBQ sauce, five different salad dressings, etc. You learn to stock up on items you use. This way you are never out!

Of course, there are items you will need (especially when you begin couponing) that are not on sale. This is when you need to determine do you have to have it now or can it wait. If it cannot wait, try to find a coupon. As well, products such as milk, eggs, etc are generally not at great prices. These are items you already know the price you will spend. Also, you must learn to plan your meals according to what you have or what is on sale. Do not plan your shopping around what you are cooking. This brings us to the next rule.

Rule #2: NEVER SHOP WITHOUT A LIST
I always make my list out as I go through the ads. I like to put the price beside the item and then the coupon value. This way, if I follow my list, I will know exactly what my bill should be when I check out. It is important to learn to plan your meals around what you already have in the home or what is on sale. If you know you will be having a party in a few weeks, begin purchasing items ahead of time that are on sale that you will need. For instance, at the end of July, we will be going to Myrtle Beach for a week. I've already begun to look for deals on items we will need while there so I do not have to "grocery shop" as much when we get there. For instance, sandwich meat is on a great deal at Bi-Lo with my coupon this week; therefore, I'm going to get a few packs and freeze a couple for the beach trip.

Rule #3: Always have a budget (and FOLLOW it)
If you follow the first two rules, you will have no problem, as long as you follow your list. Sometimes it is best to go with cash only, this way you MUST follow your budget. This Saturday while John and I are in South Carolina, I will be making a stop at Ingles (there is not one where I live). Why? Because of some great deals with General Mills Products. I have my list of 15 items, their prices, coupons I will use, and the total bill. My bill before tax (and my budget) is $7.75. Here's my list:

(2) Cocoa Puffs Cereal $2 each
(2) Betty Crocker Cake Mixes $1 each
(2) Betty Crocker Frostings $1.50 each
(3) Hamburger Helpers $1 each
(2) Old El Paso Shells $1.25 each
(4) Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks $1.50 each

Total after sale prices: $20.50

Promotion: Buy 15 General Mill Products (certain ones) and get $5.00 off.
Coupons:
-$1.00 ($1.00/2 Cocoa Puffs)
-$2.00 (2 doubled $0.50 when you buy Betty Crocker Cake Mix and Frosting)
-$0.75 ($0.75/3 Hamburger Helpers)
-$2.00 (2 doubled $0.50 Old El Paso product)
-$2.00 (2 doubled $0.50 when you buy 2 Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks)

Total Discount: -$12.75

Total Bill: $7.75 (which is what you would probably pay for 2 boxes of cereal at regular price)
(All of the above coupons I printed ONLINE at www.coupons.com or www.bettycrocker.com or www.smartsource.com. So, if you have not received the Sunday papers lately and you live near an Ingles. Go snatch up some great deals!)

Summary: PLAN, PLAN, PLAN!! In order to be effective at couponing, you must plan your grocery trip and you must stick to it! (AKA--Do not take your spouse:))

CVS: The Real Money Maker

CVS is an amazing way to stock up on household products AND earn money! Yes, that's what I said, EARN MONEY!!

CVS has a rewards card like every grocery store--ExtraCare Card. I highly suggest you go to the store and register for one. You can register online, but it will take about two weeks to receive your card. With the ExtraCare card you will receive lower prices, coupons, and Extra Bucks (EB). When you register for a card, be sure to provide your email address. If you already have a card, sign up with your email address. By providing your email address, you will receive coupons (I receive them weekly) that will help you get started.

When you use your ExtraCare Card, select items that are advertised will earn you EBs. You can then use your EBs on your next purchase (which may be immediately). I have went to CVS and made THREE different transactions in row, in order to use the EBs received immediately. Once you get started, you will have EBs to use each week, which will require you to use little or NO money!

Here's how it works:
I'm going to give you my sceniaro for this week's shopping at CVS.

(2) Old Spice Men's Body Wash $4.00 each (Regularly $4.49)
(1) Schick Hydro 5 Blade Razor $8.97 (Regularly $9.99)
(1) Gillete ProGlide Power Razor $9.97 (Regularly $12.99)
(1) Colgate Pro Clinical Toothpaste $3.99 (Regularly $4.99)

TOTAL: $30.93
Taxes (6%): $1.86
Due: $32.79

COUPONS:
$5.00 off $30 or more purchase (CVS coupon by email)
$2.00 off $6 of body wash (CVS coupon printed at store)
$1.00 off Colgate ProClinical Toothpaste (Sunday paper 6/13/2010)
$4.00 off Schick Hydro Razor (Sunday paper 6/13/2010)
$5.00 off Gillete ProGlide Razor (Sunday paper 6/6/2010)
B1G1 Free Old Spice Body Wash (Sunday paper 6/6/2010)

TOTAL DUE: $11.79
EBs from last week: $10.00

TOTAL PAID: $1.49 (Why less than $1.79-I'll explain)

NOW the big part: Extra Bucks for future purchase
(2) 4 EB for Old Spice Body Wash
(1) 4 EB for Schick Hydro
(1) 5 EB for Gillete Razor
(1) 2 EB for Colgate Toothpaste

TOTAL EB: $19.00

This means I have $19.00 I can spend at CVS!! Basically I made a $17.51 profit!

Now, you must know a couple of things.
1. Always use your $5 off $30, $4 of $20, or $3 of $15 FIRST, before EB or manufacturer coupons. If not, you may not have met the $30 requirement
2. Use your EB next. Even if the cashier tells you to use the manufacturer coupons first, you do not have to. If EBs are used last, they will not take off taxes. Say you owe $4.95 after coupons and $1.95 is taxes. If you give the cashier an EB for $5.00, you will waste $2.00, because EBs cannot be used to pay for taxes. And you do not get what's left of your EBs. Therefore, you wasted $2.00 in EBs and owe $1.95. However, if EBs are used first they do REDUCE your taxes and manufacturer coupons CAN be used to cover taxes.
3. You can stack CVS coupons with manufacturer coupons.

Questions or Concerns:
1. Isn't CVS way over priced in comparison to Wal-Mart? Yes. In general, products you find at CVS will cost more than Wal-Mart or other places. However, when using coupons, items on sale, and EBs, you spend A LOT less money.

2. Do EBs expire? Yes, they expire a month from the day you earn them, but once you begin CVSing, you will probably go weekly.

3. How many EBs can I use at once? As many as you want!

Feel free to ask any questions. When next week's ad comes out, I will try to post a great way to get started using online coupons or this coming Sunday's paper. I will list other coupons from past papers, but I realize if you are starting, you may not have these yet.

Again, CVS is a great way to stock your household supplies. I have (11) toothpastes, (3) Men's Body Washes, (4) Women's Body Wash, (2) Men's Shampoo/Conditioner, (3) sets of women's shampoo and conditioner, (20) rolls of paper towels, (24) rolls of toilet paper, diapers for my 14-month-old, and much more.

I began CVSing in March. Since then, I have saved $503.51!! That is a lot of money for only 3 months!

The "art" of Couponing...

When you tell someone that you "coupon," many reply with, "I tried that but it seems like a waste of time just to save a few dollars (if that) each week." You know what--they are right! If you simply print or clip coupons that you need and use them whenever you go to the grocery store, you are probably saving very little. In fact, it is showing little affect on your monthly grocery budget. Now, when I tell someone that I have cut our grocery and household budget in HALF in less than three months of beginning to coupon, I get "WOW...how do you do that?" That is what I hope to share with you in my blog!

First, you need to know what I consider to be household budget--this includes basically anything you need in your home. For us, this means paper towels, toilet paper, DIAPERS, cleaning supplies, laundry deterogent, basics medical necessities (vitamins, first aid, and over-the-counter medicines; not prescriptions and copays) and all groceries. I began couponing in March 2010 and have managed to get our household budget below $300 a month. That may sound great, but my goal is BELOW $200 a month--and I do hope to continue this budget come September when our new addition arrives as well.

Must important question, how do you get started? There are several blogs out there that go into great detail about organizing coupons, getting started guides, etc. Here is what I did to get my couponing journey started:

1. Look over coupon websites. There are several you can print from, but I primarily use
Coupons and Redplum.
2. Start getting the Sunday newspaper. If you are in a small town, get the local large city paper because they tend to have more coupons. Every paper differs in their coupons to a slight degree, but larger cities offer more inserts inside the Sunday Paper. When I lived in Concord, NC, I would get the Charlotte Observer still.
3. SAVE ALL COUPONS!! Either save all inserts and cut as you need the coupons or save all coupons. (It is easier to save inserts from papers at first; however, once you get hooked and do it a lot, you'll discover clipping all coupons and organzing in a binder is helpful--that's taking it to the extreme level).
4. Register for a
CVS ExtraCare Card. I will make my next post on CVS Extra Bucks and how they work, because CVS is going to become your favorite store. I get all our paper supplies, beauty supplies, diapers, and some cleaning supplies from CVS and spend VERY little (as in probably less than $25 a month).
5. Learn to stock up on items you use often and ONLY buy them when they are on sale and you have a coupon.

This is simply my getting started guided. I will start posting daily tips on getting started and deals/steals I see. I primarily follow four stores that I will keep you updated on:
Bi-Lo, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and CVS. Make sure you have the reward cards for the stores you shop at often. Many of you may shop at Wal-Mart for groceries, which I use to. Although they appear cheaper by the initial price tags, after learning to coupon well, you will see that your local grocery store ends up less expensive. However, when there are good deals at Wal-Mart and Target, I will post those as well.
